MAN: Why did Jesus come?
Jesus came to restore Creation and reign as its King.
Moving from Forgiveness toward King
Part 2 of our Man
- Commencement: Forgiveness of sins is only the beginning.
- History: The idea of forgiveness of sins did not start with Jesus, but Israel.
- Avenue: Forgiveness is not the final purpose but the avenue to coworking with God for His purposes.
- Foundation: Forgiveness provides the foundation and launching point to follow Jesus.
- Cultivation: Review of Jewish History and the longing for their Messiah.
- Brokenness: Our need for forgiveness and restoration started when perfect creation was broken by sin.
- Covenant: God’s continual promises of forgiveness, restoration, and cooperation.
- Longing: How Israel tried and failed to walk in God’s plans.
- Conflict: The clash of understanding in the time of Jesus.
- Power: Israel believed restoration would come in power with a physical kingdom .
- Expectations: The Messiah was viewed as a warrior king, who would kill their oppressive enemies and reign like David.
- Confused: In the time of Jesus, Jesus did not fulfill their hopes and dreams, but established an upside-down looking Kingdom.
- Culmination: Jesus came as the King of the Kingdom of God.
- Upside Down: Jesus proclaimed a government and a way of life that looked upside down to everyone.
- Modeled: Jesus conquered by dying for his enemies, an reigned by serving, modeling how to live in this Kingdom.
- Mission: Walking in forgiveness (our rightness with God) allows us to continue the mission of God, which is the message of Jesus, as members/citizens of His Kingdom.
